CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY (CSR)

India is a welfare state. The constitution of India has been framed in such a way as to make it incumbent on the Government of India and the state governments to take initiative to deliver services for well- being of the people at large. Alongside of the industrial, agricultural and economic development of the country the Government has so long been doing its social welfare activities. It cannot be denied that it is not possible for government alone to shoulder the enormous responsibility of doing welfare activities for the needy people. Hence comes in the role of N.G.O. It is not expected from and not possible for the government to reach out to all the people for delivering the welfare services. The NGOs can penetrate where government cannot reach.

Our country is now saddled with a burgeoning population a considerable portion of which is malnourished, poverty-stricken, and illiterate. Naturally such people suffer from socio – economic problems. It is not possible for the Government alone to address all such problems as they call for greater social action. Hence the importance of the outreach of the non-government organization is felt. So long the NGOs have been supplementing the governmental efforts. Side by side another non-state actor i.e. the corporate sector has realized the importance of taking social responsibility. The mammoth business organizations as well as the corporates are coming forward to partner with the Government to address the problems like poverty, illiteracy, malnutrition etc. to lift the social economic status of the population remaining as ‘un-included’ in the mainstream. Sometimes the corporates are seeking the partnering of the non-government organizations having good name in social welfare activities.
